We are delighted that the Filwood Green Business Park has won one of only two Design Awards made by the Bristol Civic Society on 7th June 2016.
The architect James Horner of Stride Treglown gave a presentation on the challenges of the site, how the final design was developed with input from local people at various stages, and on the environmental features that have made the building BREEAM Outstanding. Business Manager, Iwona Tempowski, talked about the success of the business park in attracting tenants and how much everyone loves working here.
Bristol City Council was represented by Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Chris Davies, who spoke at the Society’s AGM preceding the Awards, with Deputy Lady Mayoress Mrs Sue Davies.
A group of budding entrepreneurs came to visit Filwood Green Business Park yesterday as part of the UWE Bristol’s GREENpreneurs programme. Co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, the pilot course is designed to boost their team working skills and entrepreneurial mindset within the energy efficiency, renewable energy and related sectors. The group had a full tour of the building and also enjoyed talks and Q&A with two of our tenants MTS Environmental Ltd and Green Warehouse, on their experiences of setting up an environmental business. They also joined us for tea and cakes in the afternoon, which occurs every Thursday in our work hub space for tenants to network and interact with other businesses here on site.
We are very pleased to announce that Filwood Green Business Park has received its final post-construction BREEAM certificate rated ‘Outstanding’, with a score of 93%. This also means we are the 2nd most sustainable industrial building in the UK!

The £12m Green Business Park designed to boost economic prosperity and create hundreds of jobs in South Bristol was officially opened by Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson (28 May).
Filwood Green Business Park is a flagship project of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital 2015 and is a new sustainable home for small and medium sized businesses, providing 40,000 sq ft of workshop and office space.
The opening ceremony featured a theatrical performance by Cirque Bijou accompanied by drummers, stilt walkers and a BMX stunt rider, followed by a performance by Bristol 2015 European Green Capital poet, Martin Kiszko.
The Mayor then officially opened the business park and toured the building, led by architects, Stride Treglown. The building is the first of its type in the south west built to the industry leading ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ environmental and sustainability standards and has been shortlisted for a prestigious 2degrees Champions award for new building 2015.
Assistant Mayor for Place, Cllr Mark Bradshaw, Members of the Knowle West Project Board and representatives from the Homes and Communities Agency, DCLG, West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, construction company MIDAS and prospective tenants also joined the tour.
George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol said: “Filwood Green Business Park is a great vote of confidence in the future of South Bristol. It gives me huge pleasure to be able to open it during our year as European Green Capital and to invite families and members of the local community to come and see this important new development on their doorstep.
“This project is a vital component of our year as Green Capital and provides a lasting legacy for the City, creating jobs by providing environmentally conscious businesses with workshop and office space to boost economic prosperity.”
“I want to give particular thanks to the design and construction team for delivering this elegant energy efficient complex and congratulate all involved in delivering this project from both within and outside the City Council.”
Cllr Mark Bradshaw, Assistant Mayor for Place said: “Getting the new business park ready and open for business is a great achievement and it will become South Bristol’s own ‘Engine Shed’.
“So many people have helped to make this happen and the dedicated project and the construction team deserves special mention. I toured the building during construction last year and returning I see a connected, sustainable hub which is future-proofed and offers great flexibility. This building sends a clear signal that South Bristol is thinking ahead to close the gaps in skills and infrastructure.”
Adam Frontczak, Area Manager at the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Filwood Green Business Park open. It will bring huge benefits to the city, providing jobs and substantial economic value to help drive the regeneration of Knowle West. The successful development will also inspire the next phase of work: 150 new and affordable homes, alongside a public park, which will benefit the people of Knowle West for generations to come.”
Gary Milliner, of architect Stride Treglown said: “As the designers of Filwood Green Business Park we are excited to see the completed building welcomed by the local community at today’s grand opening.”

Derek Quinn, executive director at Midas Construction, said: “As a Bristol-based company we are very proud to have created Filwood Green Business Park. The build involved more than 500 people working on site in Bristol, creating training opportunities for local apprentices and employing more than 300 local sub-contractors, with 20 staff working towards an NVQ qualification.”
“This is the first commercial building in the South West ever to earn a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, and one of the highest scoring environmentally-friendly buildings in the whole of Europe.”

Key stakeholders celebrated reaching the highest point in the construction of the Filwood Green Business Park with a traditional Topping Out event on December 15th 2014.
Executive Director of Midas Construction, Derek Quinn, welcomed members of the Design Team, Project Board and representatives of the funding bodies to see the progress at Bristol’s showcase eco-friendly development. This event follows swiftly on from the official handover between Copenhagen and Bristol, the seventh city to receive the title of European Green Capital.
He said: “Our commitment to Bristol City Council was to not only to build the South West’s greenest business park, but to be a sustainable and green contractor throughout the development itself.”
Assistant Mayor for Place, Cllr Mark Bradshaw, said: “Filwood Green Business Park will support local businesses, particularly start-up enterprises and also those looking to invest in South Bristol. I want this to be a hub for enterprise, innovation and job creation in South Bristol, where a third of Bristolians live and where there are still major challenges around health, jobs, skills and access. The building will offer 40,000 sq. ft. of space in a mix of workshops, offices, incubation space and hot desks.”
Through this project local businesses can now receive help to obtain the Green Accord environmental accreditation scheme. Launched in October by Blue Orchid, who are contracted by Bristol City Council to support eligible businesses to improve their environmental performance, there has already been a good level of interest and take-up.
The scheme is suitable for even the smallest business and helps them think about their environmental performance in five key areas. Contact Blue Orchid to find out more (tel 0117 370 3134). This accreditation is one way for a business to Go Green and prove they are playing a part in Bristol’s year as European Green Capital in 2015
Designed by architect Stride Treglown the Filwood Green Business Park is the first BREEAM Outstanding industrial building in the South West. It was was recognised at the 2014 BREEAM Awards held at EcoBuild in London on 4th March.
The development was Highly Commended in their ‘Industrial’ category for a new design. It was also a finalist for BREEAM’s People’s Choice Award, which was vied for by the highest-scoring buildings across the whole of Europe.
Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson said: “It’s testament to the environmental excellence of this project that even before the first turf has been cut it has been judged as outstanding by BREEAM, and highly commended at the BREEAM Awards, the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings. “
